Abstract
The medieval fortress of Prosakos is strategically located on the slopes of the Demir Kapija Gorge and along the Vardar River, providing excellent connectivity with nearby and distant regions. The Vardar River valley and Demir Kapija Gorge have served as critical transportation routes since ancient times. During the Roman period, the area was traversed by a significant branch of the Roman road, Via Militaris, which connected Naissos to Thessaloniki. This road was the foundation for the medieval road network, which, with modifications, still exists today. In the medieval times, the road network that connected Prosakos with other regions further branched out. Based on historical sources and ancient routes, an attempt is made to reconstruct Prosakos’ role in the medieval road network on the Balkans.
