Abstract

Abstract
On the road to EU membership, regional cooperation and connectivity are a key factor, not an alternative for the countries of the Western Balkans. Cooperation and connection at the regional level are set as one of the conditions for prosperity on the way to membership in the union. Any regional cooperation initiative is of vital importance for the EU integration process.
In the last few years, I counted only about 40 regional initiatives, but the Open Balkans initiative stood out in the foreground. This initiative (initially known as Mini Schengen) arose as a need for a new type of more efficient regional economic integration, which is a consequence of the need to abolish all barriers in the interest of regional cooperation and trade in all areas between the countries of the Western Balkans, while waiting for the decision on EU enlargement . It is the result of problems arising from "CEFTA 2006" as well as the insufficient and slow implementation of the conclusions of the Berlin Process.
