The medieval Macedonian state still known in history as Samel's state, in its nearly forty years of existence left indelible traces in the history of the Macedonian people. The main features of this country are Slavic and there is a clear distinction from other neighboring Balkan countries and people. Yet the legal system, trade, and financial transactions were more or less incorporated with the respective institutions that existed and have been well establ ished in the Byzantine Empire. In fact the Byzantine legal system was used by the institu tions of Samuel's state.
