Abstract
The Crkvište archaeological site in the village of Korešnica – Demir Kapija1 is located at the far south-western part of CO Korešnica (CP526), on a flattened plateau north-west of the Juručki Kamen elevation, i.e. the Markov Grad lime-rock. The area denoted as the Crkvište site is a naturally protected terrace with dimensions 120x50 m, located 50-60 m above the river Vardar. On the western and southern sides the site is surrounded by the river, on the eastern side it is towered over by the Markov Grad massive rock elevation, while the only access to the site is on the north. The site was noticed for the first time in early 20th Century by anthropologist V. Radovanović (Радовановић, 1924, 322.). Later, as part of the scientific research project “Old towns and fortresses in the middle of the Vardar River course”, under the leadership of I. Mikulčić, with the participation of V. Lilčić and N. Čausidis, surface prospections and topographic recordings were made (Микулчиќ, 1989, 70-71, 84.; Чаусидис, 1987.; Лилчиќ, 1989, 73.). In 2012, as part of the protective research on the Corridor X route, protective archaeological research was carried out under the leadership of V. Kaleova.
During the archaeological research at the Crkvište site between 1 November and 10 December 2016, research was conducted on the area where previous illegal excavations partially discovered and devastated the construction of a building. The research was done to determine the function and the chronology of the structure. The research showed that this was a sacral structure – a church – with at least two construction phases, raised on top of an early classical horizon. The older phase of the church is dated to the early Byzantine period (5-6th centuries), while the newer phase in the developed and late Middle Ages (12-14th centuries). Certain construction interventions suggest that the church was renovated in late 14th century and that it was functioning in the period of Turkish Middle Ages (15-16th centuries). To the east and south of the church there were five burials that were discovered and researched, which according to the movable material are dated to 12-14th centuries.
