Abstract

As can be seen from the above, the available information on the economy of medieval Prilep does not deviate much from the simultaneously existing information on the region of Eastern Macedonia where, for now, we have the most information on the reconstruction of the economy. In medieval Prilep, the primary segment is agriculture, where polycultural production is represented, but, although to a lesser extent, crafts are still present, which probably managed to meet the needs of the population, ie. agricultural and other tools, pottery and jewelry.
Diplomatic material is our most accessible source for the agrarian economy of late-medieval Prilep. Most of the land was fields, probably intended for growing cereals, as evident by the rather large number of mills, a total of 34. There were often vineyards on the properties, whereas orchards and gardens are mentioned less frequently. Livestock can be traced indirectly. One of the properties instead of kabli is expressed in zeugarion (ox-gang), i.e. in an area that can be processed by four pairs of oxen. The rest of the data refer to the properties that are meadows, hayfields, mountains and winter pastures, but also to the Vlach and Arbanas presence, which indicates that cattle and livestock should not be neglected. We do not have enough information about the organization of production, and we can reconstruct it, mainly through the knowledge on Eastern Macedonia, i.e. through the praktikon preserved on Mount Athos that abound in this type of data.
Crafts in this period have a secondary role in the economy, but, nevertheless, they are closely related to the agricultural production, which they supply with the necessary tools. For the craftsmen, the narrative sources contain little data, only in the case where the blacksmith‘s yard is mentioned. For other information, our main source is archeology. From the excavations, in the second half of the 20th century, we can conclude that in the suburbs of medieval Prilep there was an organized craft district in the area which was called fairground. Workshops for smelting iron, non-ferrous metals, glass, ceramics, as well as various other workshops for finishing semi-finished products have been discovered. As part of the households, female members in almost every household spun and weaved, making canvases of plant and animal origin. Many of the trades can not be identified with certainty, and the catalog of findings shows that there are still many trades that have not left deep traces for a more reliable identification.
Further analysis of the small finds, distribution and the quantity of tools found reveals a number of details about the representation of certain agricultural and handicraft activities in the area of medieval Prilep, in the late medieval period.
