Abstract
Ageing as a product of the aging process, results in certain physical and mental weaknesses in the older adults, which largely leave far-reaching consequences in the social
field. Namely, the vulnerable state plays an undoubtedly significant role in the process of victimogenesis. Hence, the process of victimization of the elderly is perceived through the prism of the following determinants: the individual characteristics of the elderly, the
perpetrator-victim relationship, and the victim's contribution to a different type of criminality.
The causality between these determinants and the criminal victimization enabled the clarification of a very important element in the study of the older adults as victims. Namely,
in every form of abuse the old person is a victim, but not always the abuse is a crime.
Theoretical knowledge of the older adults as victims of violent and property crime is analyzed within the empirical part of the dissertation. According to data from our study, a sample of 224 older adults of 65 years of age, found that improving their health reduced the risk of becoming a victim of crime, while men with worse health were more at risk. Among other things, we have found that: lack of an active lifestyle does not contribute to an increased risk of criminal victimization; the primary education group is then most at risk of criminal victimization, as well as the fact that nearly half of the elderly have been victims of
financial, mental and physical abuse within the family circle. In terms of the type of crime,
55.8% of the elderly faced property as against 26.8% who were victims of violent crime.
