Abstract
Tourism is one of the largest and fastest growing sectors in the world economy, including a number of stakeholders in the implementation of operational activities. Mass tourism has proved insensitive to the local community, concentrating on large and luxurious resorts, hotel chains that in large numbers were not in symbiosis with the environment, with the emergence of far-reaching degradation and devastation of destinations.
Eco-tourism in its essence contains responsible travel, sustainability of destinations, use of environmental norms and standards. In the last two decades, this type of tourism has increasingly motivated tourists to travel and explore destinations where it has been practiced. Eco-tourism could be a valuable tool for financing the protection of sensitive natural areas and the socio-economic development of the local community in the area and strengthening the cooperation of the tourism industry and the tourists themselves.
In RN Macedonia there is a trend of increasing application of eco-tourism in destinations that abound in natural attractions, integrating the local community in its application. This doctoral dissertation is dedicated to eco-tourism as a modern concept for tourism development in the Republic of North Macedonia.
