Abstract
Abstract
The lack of pragma-linquistic competence, i.e. the inadequate implementation of the forms and functions of speech acts in interactions among interlocutors with different cultural backgrounds and different native languages often leads to misunderstandings and difficulties in their communication.
These issues emerge especially due to non-native speakers' unawareness that certain forms have more than one function. In this contrastive analysis we focus our attention on comparing the linguistic strategies used for expressing explicit, emotional gratitude in Macedonian and English, 'fala' and 'blagodaram' and 'thanks' and 'thank you' respectively, with regard to their usage in formal and informal speech and their functions as politeness and discourse markers.
Key words: politeness, gratitude, discourse markers
