Abstract
Abstract
Verbal irony is a figurative language use which can easily cause misunderstanding among interlocutors. Hence, its frequent usage in everyday speech can be attributed merely to the fact that ironic utterances express much more than literal ones, i.e. they perform pragmatic functions (such as for instance: expressing humour, criticism, surprise, self-control, ridicule, humiliation etc.) which cannot be performed by direct (literal) utterances.
This paper offers an overview of some of the most prominent theories dealing with this issue, namely theories which have made attempts to detect and discover the pragmatic functions of verbal irony.
Key words: verbal irony, pragmatic functions
