Abstract
Abstract
Expressing gratitude is a universal speech act which is present in all languages worldwide. It is a complex linguistic phenomenon which is closely connected to politeness, and as a speech act it is characterized by the existence of many different types of gratitude depending on the object of gratitude; then by the ability for creating complex speech acts and performing various functions.
This paper offers a review of some of the most significant findings concerning various aspects of the speech act of expressing gratitude which mainly refer to the English language and which more or less apply to other languages as well.
