Abstract

Didactically prepared texts, reading word after word, and working only with unknown words stunts the ability to understand authentic texts. As a result of that, the first stage and the further processes of learning languages, curiosity and interest, but above all the application in life, are limited. The use of the learners' world knowledge and pre-knowledge, and the development of understanding through context, are unlearned. Therefore, we have to work with authentic texts and teach strategies for understanding already from the beginning of the foreign language lessons. For the foreign language classes for tourism students tourism information materials are ideal. A concrete example is represented in this contribution.
