Abstract

The Balkan space, intertwined with the people and civilizations through centuries, now gets a new perspective within Europe. Although some of the Western Balkan
countries have become part of NATO, nevertheless, in general, they are similar in terms of the current internal situation (democratically elected governments,
changes in politics, economy and society as a whole) and they are still working on developing the potential for a rational management of the of state and on achieving
the objectives arising from the process of EU and NATO integration. In order to complete the picture, the states are characterized, to a higher or lesser extent, by
continued political instability, ethnic tensions and economic crises resulting from the transition process, corruption, organized crime and emerging consequences of
the global crisis.
In such an environment, the international factor represented by the EU, U.S. and NATO implemented several initiatives with a strong security impact, including the most significant among them, the Southeast European Co-operative Initiative - SECI (1996), the Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe (1999) and establishment of the Adriatic Charter (2003). An especially strong impulse has been given with the conception of the Stability Pact, which represents a boost to the regional cooperation in the post-conflict Balkans and which has resulted in new initiatives created as part of it.
Therefore, today, depending on the progress in integration processes, there is an increased degree of the realization of the idea of mutual security assistance and support for a faster and more effective overcoming of the challenges arising from the Euro and Euro-Atlantic integrations.

Key words: security, policy, initiative, cooperation, interest.
