Abstract
Considering the fact that Macedonia is not member of the European Union and NATO, this is something that directly affects the management of the borders and the state’s response to security threats. In circumstances where the country is bordered by two member states of the EU (one of them is also in the Schengen Area) and three members of NATO, however, border management still represents a strong national security challenge due to the fact that Balkan countries are still stuck in the understanding of security through the concept of Westphalia sovereignty, while bilateral disputes and open issues are present in all spheres of social life.
