With the signing of the Treaty on European Union (Treaty on European Union / Treaty of Maastricht) was first formally confirmed that issues of security (Common Foreign and Security Policy - II pillar, Justice and Home Affairs - III pillar) is a common concern all Member States. The process of joint action in the field of external security in the formal legal sense is completed with the adoption of the European Security Strategy (European Security Strategy) summit in Brussels. Institutionally speaking, even the Treaty of Amsterdam (The Amsterdam Treaty) of 1997, which represents the addition of the Treaty on European Union, initiated the idea of creating the EU as an area of freedom, security and justice (Area of Freedom, Security and Justice - AFSJ).
Subject of research is determining the role of the European Union in running the new international policy according modern global challenges, threats and risks and determine the security policy and strategy of the former Yugoslav countries such as Macedonia, Serbia, Croatia and Montenegro aimed at building national security and safety of regional and global surroundings.
The purpose of this paper is to approach the area of Euro Atlantic integration - European area of freedom, security and justice to the professional and scientific community. The practical purpose of this paper is a contribution to a better understanding of European security in general and the modern concept of national security.
