Hospitality is one of the fastest growing industries in the world today. The broader meaning of the term hospitality industry might refer to any group that is engaged in travel and tourism, lodging, food service, meetings, conventions and expositions, leisure and recreations. But the two main segments of this industry are the lodging industry, also called the hotel industry, and food and beverage industry, also called restaurant industry. Quality is a category which identifies product characteristics with and aim to satisfy consumer’s needs. The categorization or rating of accommodation facilities is the basis for determining quality standards in the hospitality industry. To be included in the right kind of hotel facilities and obtain the appropriate category, object must meet the minimum requirements for each category.
The paper is also dealing with categorization systems of accommodation facilities in Europe and the contemporary aspects of this process in Macedonia with some proposals for the improvement.
