This paper covers conditions and principles that are significantly important in the course of road design. Its aim is that the nwely reconstructed roads, to be as safe as possible-well ahead the construcuiton begins, so that there would not occur traffic accidents whatsoever. The road safety principles represent a basis for the technical content of a road design and the process of audit. The principles include analysis and synthesis of the existing documentation and experiences of the developed countries where RSA is carried out in a quite formalized way. The description in the paper is not a detailed one. Common features of a proactive approach which is, at the moment, applicable in the world, and mostly based on the Danish experiences have been shown. The road safety principles represent a basis for the technical content of a road design and the process of audit. These principles are intended for and recommended to the designing offices, consulting companies, road agencies, as a practical method targeted in providing safe roads for all the users. It is expected that it will significantly contribute in the prevention of road traffic accidents.
