It is well documented that health-risk behaviors are linked to socioeconomic status, but some reasons
for this remain unclear. The objectives: To analyze and evaluate the results for socioeconomic inequalities:
income and education on the consumption of the main health-related foods and physical activity among
Macedonian adult population and to develop a health promotion model for effective behavioral modification.
Methods: The cross-section, population-based study was conducted in the Republic of Macedonia in 2012
using food frequency (FFQ) and leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) questionnaires. The sampling unit
was the individual including 1020 adult participants, with the core age range from 19 to 64 years. Variable
measured: The frequency of consumption of bread, milk and dairy products, meat, vegetables and fruits, and
LTPA. Indicators of socioeconomic inequalities: income and education. Data analysis was carried out using
STATISTICS version 7 software package. Projected future ratio (PFR) of economic and education status of
food groups and physical activity was estimated using Buhlmann-Straub statistical method. Results: The use
of whole grain breads, low fat milk and fish were more prevalent among higher educated participants with
better income. Decreased LTPA were estimated among low educated participants. A health promotion model
included several steps integrating the multiple factors that influence behavior. Conclusions: The radical
change in the food market and reformulation, developing guidelines and policy on labeling and health claim,
and city planning that will enhance LTPA are among the measures that will help get the NCD’s epidemic
under control.
Keywords: food habits, physical activity levels, health-risk behavior, education health promotion, chronic diseases prevention
