Background: Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is the main risk factor for development of precancerous
intraepithelial lesions and cervical cancer. However, not only HPV, but also HPV type, is a very important
factor for malignant transformation. The distribution and prevalence of HPV types depend on geographic region
and demographic factors.
Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the distribution of human papillomavirus (HPV) in women with
abnormal cervical cytology in University Clinic of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Medical Faculty, Ss. Cyril and Methodius
University, Skopje, from October 2010 to April 2011.
Material and Methods: Using a PCR technique, 502 samples of women with histological diagnosis of lowgrade
squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL-308) or high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL-194)
were genotyped. The polymerase chain reaction for detecting HPV DNA was performed using fresh cell samples
from the cervix in every women.
Results: HPV was detected in 51.2% of LSIL and 68.1% of HSIL. The main genotypes found were HPV 6, 11,
16, 31, 45, 52 and 58. HPV 16 was the most common in both LSIL (30.3%) and HSIL (40.7%). HPV 16 or 18 were
present in 36.6% and 46.1% of the LSIL and HSIL respectively. In both LSIL and HSIL, the predominant viral genotypes
were of high oncogenic risk.
Conclusions: HPV genotypes 6, 11, 16, 31, 45, 52 and 58 were the most common in our series. High risk
types, HPV 16 and 18, included in commercial vaccines, were found in 36.6% and 46.1% of LSIL and HSIL, respectively.
