At the dawn of the 21st century heritage cities become more and more associated to tourism. This relation brings to both positive and negative issues related to functional balance, urban planing, development of hospitality industry, heritage protection, accessibility, urban environment, tourist promotion, and in short, development.
There is no culture without an active integration of the past towards present and future. In the realm of culture we are all conservatives as well as progressives, creators and recreators. This creative vocation of culture can transform tourists’ behaviour, if we alter all tourist practices into a cultural experience. Cultural tourism is and should be the best guarantee of tourism to become a part of sustainable development.
Heritage cities faced many challenges throughout their history. An example that contributes to this statement is the ancient City of Ohrid - Lichnidos. City of sun and light, filled with monuments and cathedrals which emphasises the beauty of the narrow winding streets, the gallery arcades and museums the windows and gates - portas*, harmonised by a geometry where one can see the traces of many peoples and cultures.
The variety both of cultural sites and the uniqueness of Lake Ohrid with many endemic species of flora and fauna are the main prerequisites for this region to be declared as a UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage Site in 1980.
