Inheritance of the characters of parental genotypes in their hybrids is conditioned by various effective factors, i.e. groups of genes named polygenes, the effect of which is determined by diallel crossings and diallel analysis. Investigations of major quantitative characters (stalk height, leaf number per stalk, length/width/area of the middle belt leaves, green and dry mass yield per stalk), were made on four parental genotypes of tobacco: Prilep (P 12-2/1), Pobeda 2 (P 2), Yaka (YV 125/3) and Forchheimer Ogrodowni (FO) and their six F1 hybrids. Crossings were made in 2005 and the final trial was set in 2006, on the field of Tobacco Institute-Prilep, in a randomized block design with four replications.
The aim of our investigations was to determine the level of inheritance of measurable characters through assessment of the effective factors: number of genes (k) and their additive (d) and dominant (h) effects, which will be a significant contribution to the quantitative genetics of tobacco. Analyses and assessments were based on the methods and mathematical models of B. I. Hayman, K. Mather and J.L. Jinks.
In all combinations, the additive effect was higher than the dominant one (d>h), implying that inheritance of uantitative characters is created mainly by the additive genes. Values for the effective factors are very low and insufficient to make their estimation. Referring to the strength of gene effect, they are ranged in almost the same level, except for the characters stalk height and dry mass yield per stalk. The highest grade for additive genes strength in the inheritance of stalk height was recorded in the semioriental variety FO, and for the strength of dominant genes in P 12-2/1.The trongest effect of both additive and dominant genes for the characters leaf number and length/width/area of the middle belt leaves was recorded in YV 125/3, and for the green and dry mass yield in P-2.
Results presented in the paper are of a great interest for tobacco breeding (Nicotiana tabacum L.), and the methods are applicable for many other cultures.
