Five varieties (Dj-291, Dj-1, Pobeda 2, Dj-38 and Orient 138) and one line (L-3) of tobacco
type Djebel were investigated in 2003-2004.The characters investigated were: height of the stalk with
inflorescence, number of leaves per stalk, length, width and area of the middle belt leaves and green
mass yield per stalk and per hectare. The trial was set up in the field of Tobacco Institute - Prilep, using
randomized block system with four replications. Data from investigations were processed by variational-statistical method. Variability of the characters was presented through standard deviation and
coefficient of variability.
The aim of our investigations was to give some information that can be used in selection of
oriental tobacco of the type Djebel.
The best results for the characters length, width and area of the middle belt leaves were found
in Dj-291, which also had the highest green mass yield (101 g/stalk and about 18 900 kg/ha). The old
standard high-quality aromatic variety Dj -1 was the smallest in size and had the lowest yield of green
mass (53 g/stalk and about 10 000 kg/ha). The present standard Dj -38 has significantly higher yield
only from Dj -1, while compared to the other genotypes investigated, the difference in the yield is not
significant. Of all genotypes, only Orient-138 has uninformed population and it will take several years
to purify it. Line L-3 is early maturing, stable and with higher yield, and by its morpho-biological and
quality characteristics it is closest to Dj-1.
