Abstract

The paper presents the current practices of the students of the Faculty of Security in Skopje regarding the use of the Cyrillic alphabet, as well as their views on the tendencies regarding the status of the Cyrillic alphabet in the Republic of Macedonia in formal and informal communication, 1,100 years after the reassurance of its founder - St. Clement of Ohrid. The paper focuses on the use of Cyrillic alphabet in written communication, with a particular emphasis on Internet-mediated communication through mobile phones and computers. In order to investigate the students' views on these issues, a questionnaire was distributed to the students for the purpose of the paper, after which the results were statistically processed. The findings from the research will serve as a good indicator of the status of the Cyrillic alphabet in this category of younger Macedonian speakers, as well as of the possible tendencies, generally speaking, of Macedonian language speakers' practices in the clearly globalized XXI century. Keywords: Cyrillic alphabet, St. Clement of Ohrid, Macedonian language, communication
