Changes occurring in tobacco leaves during after-harvest processes are mainly due to the concentration of the activity of free molecular oxygen. Our knowledge on the effect of molecular oxygen allowed us to select the most suitable way of tobacco storage, for obtaining the highest quality tobacco raw. The way of storage has a great influence on the rate of absolute humidity in tobacco. In tobaccos placed in istiva- and pack-bales, the absolute humidity does not show direct dependence on relative air humidity. Humidity in these tobaccos decreases gradually, having a positive effect on tobacco quality, contrary to tobacco stored in common bales, where frequent changes of humidity lead to a rapid deterioration of its quality. Investigations were carried out in 2002, 2003 and 2004, with oriental tobacco of the type Prilep. Tobacco stored in istiva-bales has a big percentage of high classes - 73%, in pack bales - 77% and in common bales -only 54%. The average purchase price ranges from 88.5 denars/kg in common bales to 112.1 denars/ kg in istiva-bales and 117.1 denars per kg in pack-bales.
