Abstract

Resistance to P. parasitica var. nicotianae, the causing agent of the black shank disease in tobacco, was investigated in 12 tobacco cultivars and three species of the genus Nicotiana. Young tobacco plants were inoculated with various isolates of the fungus. Two methods of inoculation were applied:
- inoculation of seedlings in a cotyledone stage with suspension of the fungus, and
- root inoculation of young plants in a stage of 2-3 leaves.
In both methods of inoculation, the cultivars which were known as resistant, confirmed their resistance, i.e. susceptibility to the two races of the fungus. Results reveal that these two methods can be successfully applied in detection of the resistance to black shank in early stages, which would be of benefit for the selection of new tobacco varieties.
