Virus infection with TMV significantly affects the chloroplast pigments content and anatomic structure of the oriental tobacco leaves. Investigations were made with three oriental tobacco varieties on plants inoculated in two growth stages ( 30 days after transplanting and prior to butonization ). The TMV infection increased the content of chloroplast pigments in true middle leaves and in undertip leaves. Chlorophyll A content decreased 5.48% to 21.84% in plants inoculated before butonization in thre middle leaf. The highest decrease of Total chlorophyll A+B ( 20.06%) was recorded in true middle leaf of plants inoculated 30 days after transplanting, in early infection, ( plants inoculated 30 days after transplanting), decrease of Total chlorophyll A+B was the highest in undertip leaves (27.96%).
Leaves of inculated plants are with smaller intercellular space. Chloroplasts are irregular and smaller in size compared to those in healthy leaves.
