The problem of a mismatch between the skill requirements of newly created jobs and effective skills of workers in the Macedonian labour market has been identified since the outset of the transitional process. Despite the generally recognised problem of skill mismatch in the Macedonian labour market, only recently has the relevant institution acknowledged the importance of evidence-based policies to improve the matching process. The identification of future skills needs in Macedonia is characterised by a number of shortcomings such as: absence of modern forecast techniques based on econometric modelling, lack of clear delineation between different horizons for future skills needs and unawareness of the policymakers about the importance of this issue. The overall purpose of the project is to develop an appropriate model for anticipation of skill needs in Macedonia, incorporating both demand and supply sides, in order to provide policy makers with strategic tools for decision making. With this project we intend to fill the gap in the existing forecasting practices of skill needs in Macedonia by promoting quantitative projections based on scientifically established methods. Furthermore, we expect to raise awareness among relevant institutions in Macedonia about the advantages of modelling future skill needs and finally, to produce a draft version of medium-term forecasts for skill needs in Macedonia.
