Abstract

The concept of sustainable development aims are achieving sustainable economic growth, increasing the well-being of people and their quality of life while providing long-term environmental protection. According to this concept it is necessary to respect the limits of carrying capacity of environment and to adapt human activities to the sustainability of natural systems. One of the indicators of sustainable development is the ecological footprint. The ecological footprint is a quantitative measure that shows the usage of natural resources by people and their impact on the environment. This indicator compares the biologically productive area that people use for their needs with available biologically productive area within a region, a country or the world as a whole. In short, it is a measure of human impact on Earth's ecosystem and reflects the dependence of the human economy from natural capital. It is measured in terms of the amount of bio-productive land needed to support the consumption of people as well as for absorbing their waste. When ecological footprint is equal or lower than bio-capacity, the country is in a harmony with its natural capacity and this scenario is sustainable. On the other hand, a higher ecological footprint than bio-capacity means unsustainability. Therefore, reducing the ecological footprint is a path towards sustainability. Ecological footprints can be calculated for an activity, a person, a city, a region, a country, or the world as a whole. This indicator can be a measure of intra-generational equity in the short term (comparing ecological footprints among people in one country, city, and among people in different countries in the world), as well as a measure of inter-generational equity in the long term (as an indicator of whether future generations will be able to meet their needs). The main objective of this paper is to present the ecological footprint in the Republic of Macedonia as well as the activities for reducing this footprint in order to protect the environment in Macedonia. Keywords: ecological footprint, bio-capacity, indicator, sustainable development, Macedonia.
