Abstract
The aim of this paper is to assess the role of the alternative labour market adjustment mechanisms in Macedonia and their impact on household finances during the recent economic crisis. The two decades long period of transition in Macedonia has been characterised with depressed conditions which is manifested by high and persistent unemployment rate, strong labour market segmentation and prevalence of long-term unemployment. The recent recession has undoubtedly affected all spheres of the economy including the labour market performance. In this context, disadvantaged segments have been concerned more than the rest of the labour force. According to our hypothesis, the negative macroeconomic shock in Macedonia has not been fully transferred in the domain of the labour market due to the strengthened role of the alternative labour market adjustment mechanisms such as employment in the informal sector, emigration and inactivity. With respect to this, we attempt to identify their capacity to absorb part of the unemployed workforce and cushion the economic and social consequences of persistent unemployment by using a survey of registered unemployed. Finally, we intend to formulate appropriate policy measures in order to encourage labour supply and strengthen job creation in the formal sector of the economy.
