University students employ different approaches to learning that are influenced by many individual and contextual factors such as subject matters, students’ perceptions of the professors’ preferences and expectations, time, learning styles, individual preferences, motivation, interests, etc. Students have variety of interests and aspirations that model their approaches to learning, but they also have inherited learning habits form their previous education. University education aims towards deep studying that includes critical literacy competencies on the part of the students in terms of having in mind that the texts are intermediated and influenced by the author, and that they are not original representatives of the truth alone, i.e. they are coded, and thus – biased and ideologized. The aim of this paper is to explore the university students’ approaches to learning in relation to the critical literacy competencies that they employ in the process of reading texts. We have conducted students’ survey with one questionnaire with both open and close-ended questions. The questionnaires have been distributed among university students at the Faculty of Education-Bitola, with the descriptive statistics analysis that followed, and the results have shown that there are variety of learning approaches that students use in order to learn, and that they are not fully aware of the fact that they have to be actively engaged in the process of questioning the meaning of the texts as part of the critical literacy development.
