The concept of regionalism is driven from the different nongovernmental factors that can influence various economic and political activities among countries. Regionalism since the Second World War has been expending through couple of waves, the first with the introduction of the European Union on the global arena and the cooperation with the developing world and the second wave was through the creation of the Single European Market, the introduction of NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement), the proposal for Free Trade Area of Americas (FTAA), MERCOSUR and other similar agreements which mark the second wave or specifically the introduction of the new regionalism. These agreements and the introduction of international organizations are not the only factors influencing regionalism, globalization and the change of international norms have had a huge influence on regionalism, too. But in order to further understand the new regionalism it can be observed through two spheres the economic and the political and in the scenario of the European Union. In the economic sphere, regionalism was concerned with the development of regional policies and their effects on the economic life of the regions. Today in addition to this are introduced the macroeconomic surveillance and financial monitoring as addition to the trade liberalization and the market. In the political sphere, we see the development of regional human rights and mechanisms of humanitarian military intervention and democratic breakdowns instead of the regionalism in the past that was concerned with national or ethnic minorities who should have disappeared from the new societies. The role of the European Union is very important in this case because the new modern economic regionalism will be most easily presented and it is the experiment in the new form of political cooperation.
