The main goal of this paper is to describe and analyze the real situation regarding the status of the European Union in the 21st century, and to determine whether it is a supranational entity with a unified structure and policies, or it is just a simple amount of different plural interests.
The most convenient methods for this paper are the descriptive method, the analytical method and historical – comparative method, because of the character of the paper. One of the results which should come out of this paper will be the analysis of the evolution of the status of the European Union, i.e. we should show that the supranational model is continuously spreading over more and more areas and policies of the European Union, and that the inter-governmental model is rarely used, only in certain areas and policies of it. Unfortunately, these areas and policies are very important and they inhibit the normal work of the Union.
The concrete effect of the paper should be the emphasizing of the advantages and disadvantages of being a supranational entity and being an entity where the interests of different plural groups are clashing on a daily basis, and at the end, we would give a recommendation which type of model we concern as the most appropriate one: the supranational, the intergovernmental, or something in between.
