The main goal of the public sector is to promote and to further accelerate the equal socio-economic regional development in the Republic of Macedonia. An equal and polycentric regional development is a condition sine qua non for rational use of the regional resources as a key variable for the overall economic development during the process of integration of the country to the EU. Thus, the paper examines the public sector employment (measured by the number of employees deflated by population) and its contribution to the process of improving some of the statistically available key socio-economic characteristics within the eight statistical planning regions in the country. In doing that, the research methodology is based on analyzing past and current research papers and governmental reports as well as utilizing the available or already calculated empirical data provided by the State Statistical Office which is stored as open data within the MAKSTAT database. Also, we use the data on public sector employment in local governments for calculating regional public sector employment provided by the Ministry of Information Society and Administration (MIOA). As a result, the scope of the research in the paper depends on the knowledge and available data that already exists in the literature and practice of public sector employment as well as regional characteristics. We hypothesize that in those regions where the public sector is bigger in size in terms of employment are expected better socio-economic conditions. Besides, the research results are somewhat mixed and impose important implications for further development.
