The protection of fundamental human rights and freedoms is an inherent segment of all constitutions of democratic states in Europe, but also they are an essential part of the acquis communautaire of the European Union. Freedom and justice go 'hand in hand' with democracy. The Ombudsman is one of the key actors or protagonists of care and protection for human rights and freedoms. Therefore, the subject of this paper will be a comparative analysis of the responsibilities, challenges and results that characterize the European Ombudsman and the Ombudsman in the Republic of Macedonia as a country which is a candidate for European Union membership. Compatible with the character of the paper, the most widely used methods of research are descriptive method, comparative method and the method of content analysis as well as inductive method.
