Abstract

The introductory part of the paper entitled " The place and significance of tobacco in Macedonia – from the past to the present ", is focused on the fact that tobacco occupies a special place in the structure of agriculture with enormous socio-economic significance for our country and in the past decades, the production of tobacco, and especially oriental tobacco in Macedonia, is characterized by enviable quality and world reputation.
Taking into account the importance of tobacco, its production should be directed towards obtaining higher income per unit area and of course higher quality raw material. The agricultural sector in Macedonia is of great importance for the development and advancement of the economy and, together with forestry and fisheries, is the third largest sector (after services and industry) in the country.
The starting point for constructing the theoretical part of the paper will be the reports from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management of the Republic of Macedonia, the State Statistical Office, data from the World Bank database, etc.
In the empirical part, the scientific method will be used - statistical analysis conducted on data obtained from survey questionnaires, whereby the data analysis will be carried out with the method of descriptive explanation of the results obtained from the research, with the mandatory application of the comparative method.
In the concluding observations, the socio-economic importance of tobacco for the country, the importance of good organization, planned production and the strategic management approach are highlighted.
