Abstract

The rural economy represents a significant segment in the socio-economic development of every country. In the context of sustainable development, rural areas have a key role as they are a source of natural resources, agricultural production and biodiversity. They are also spaces where traditional values and cultural heritage are preserved and passed on to future generations (Van der Ploeg, 2008).
The purpose of this paper is to explore the opportunities and challenges facing the rural economy and to present strategies for its integration into contemporary trends of sustainable development through a comparative analysis of rural development in the Republic of North Macedonia and some of the countries in the European Union. Through the analysis of various theoretical models and practical examples, the potential of rural areas as a driver of sustainable development will be presented, with an emphasis on the balance between the economy, society and the environment (Sachs, 2015).

Keywords: sustainable development, biodiversity, resources, economy, environment.
