Abstract

This paper presents the detection of irradiated wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) treated with different doses of ionizing radiation (0.2 kGy, 0.5 kGy, 1 kGy, 5 kGy, and 10 kGy). The objective was to compare two physical methods: photostimulated luminescence (PSL) and thermoluminescence (TL), to evaluate their reliability in detecting wheat irradiation. It has been found that both methods can confirm unirradiated wheat, but for irradiated samples, their sensitivity depends on the irradiation doses. Wheat irradiated with the lowest irradiation dose (0.2 kGy) cannot be detected either with photostimulated luminescence or thermoluminescence, thus indicating the need for different detection methods. The photostimulated luminescence method can successfully detect wheat irradiated with 0.5 kGy, but only when multiple samples are tested and when positive results dominate the intermediate ones. For higher irradiation doses (1 kGy, 5 kGy and 10 kGy), PSL can provide reliable results, thus, the thermoluminescence method is unnecessary. It was concluded that PSL could be used as a primary detection method for confirming unirradiated wheat and the wheat irradiated with higher doses. However, for very low doses, PSL must be combined with TL to improve detection reliability.
