Local culture and traditions represent an important part of contemporary tourist offer. Very attractive are those destinations that have such characteristics in their offer. One of the means to provide an unforgettable cultural experience to the tourists is the organizing of traditional related events. This becomes increasingly evident given the fact that event tourism has shown rapid growth in the last few years. It starts to be one of the most interesting and attractive types of contemporary tourism in the world. In this paper the effects of event tourism will be presented, alongside with the different types of events that can be organized determined by different criteria. The research part of the paper comprises the identification of all the different tradition related events in the Republic of Macedonia. Also presented are the potentials for development of event tourism, as well as the problems and obstacles of successful implementation of related tourism development strategies. We also identified more than 30 possible events that are characterized by a high level of traditionality and that can be organized in the Republic of Macedonia. They are evaluated by their effects in different social, cultural and economic domains, using the strategy for development of event tourism in Scotland, but adapted for the specific circumstances in Macedonia.
