Abstract

The paper discusses the problem of “false asylum seekers” from Macedonia in some of the EU countries after the visa liberation. It focuses upon the following questions: Have
the authorities found the right way to deal with this problem? Did they address the root of the problem? In order to answer the questions the paper critically evaluates the measures that were undertaken by the authorities in response to the EU request to reduce the number of unfounded asylum applications in the EU. The analysis reveals that authorities have focused on the question of how to prevent citizens to leave, as well as that some of the introduced measures were/are not in accordance with the human rights law. The authorities did not address the root of the problem. Therefore, the paper involves the concept of human security into discussion. It examines whether the human security approach provides a more sustainable solution to the problem of increased asylum applications from Macedonia in the EU states than
the enhanced border security
