Abstract

Reconstituted tobacco is a tobacco surrogate: industrial tobacco obtained from tobacco raw material (waste material) which could not otherwise be made into cigarettes. The reconstituted tobacco has the same characteristics as natural tobacco in terms of the absorption, retention and desorption of moisture, depending on the environmental conditions. Water-retention capacity, absorption and desorption are dependent on the type of raw material from which the reconstituted tobacco has been manufactured, and the quantity of the given softener.
The aim of our investigations is to enable the cigarette manufacturer to store and insert reconstituted tobacco into cigarettes during production through understanding the dynamics of absorption and desorption of moisture and the water-retention capacity of the reconstituted tobacco produced from different raw materials and with different percentages of softener.
Raw materials consisting of ribs of Burley and Virginia, waste ribs from manufacture and mixtures of manufactured offal and remanufactured cigarettes were taken as the material for investigation. The raw materials were treated with 5 %, 10 % and 15 % softener during the manufacture of reconstituted tobacco. Reconstituted tobacco used as a control was obtained from untreated raw material. Sorbitol was used as a softener. Reconstituted tobacco manufactured with higher percentages of sorbitol retains moisture longer, desorbs more slowly, and has better physical and smoke characteristics.
