Abstract

The subjects of our investigations were studies of tobacco raw material chemical characteristics and the chemical, physical and taste characteristics of smooth and rough reconstituted tobacco produced from that raw material. The tobacco raw material is constructed as follows: 60 % offal from manufacture, 20 % offal from manipulation, 20 % remanufactured offal.
This raw material has been taken directly from the Reconstituted Tobacco Department (Tobacco Combinate - Prilep), where they use technology by “Arenco” from rough reconstituted tobacco, produced by a slurry method. Both types of reconstituted tobacco (smooth and rough) have been produced by hand using a recipe according to a stereotype with a hole o,7 mm.
The aim of our investigation was to compare the smooth and rough reconstituted tobacco. Regarding the chemical structure, there were great differences during the production process itself from raw material to reconstituted tobacco. These changes are due to the fact that the raw material has been influenced by the water and high temperature in the technological process during the reconstituted tobacco drying.
Regarding some physical characteristics, smooth reconstituted tobacco seems to be better than the rough reconstituted tobacco, for example: it has 54 % greater flexibility, 8 % greater tearing resistance, 47 % greater filling capacity. Regarding taste characteristics, preference has been shown for the rough reconstituted tobacco, with 72,6 % points in subjective tests which is 1,6 % greater than smooth reconstituted tobacco taste estimation.
