Abstract

Smuggling of migrants, as many other criminal phenomena is connected to people’s movement, and is fueled by their needs, necessities, destinies and dreams. If the Arab Spring was the starting point of embodying the dream for a better tomorrow and democracy, human rights and good life for everyone freed from the shackles of authoritarian rule, in the culmination it lost its peaceful core and opened a period of nightmares for local people. Pushed from their homes, they tried to find solace and security moving towards places known by a constant existence of welfare. At the end, someone’s dream became a business opportunity for others. During the period when the Balkan Route was opened, 477 856 migrants and refugees (who were documented) passed through Macedonia, 18 349 of whom were unaccompanied children. With the closing of the Balkan Route, smuggling of migrants’ business started to flourish, with everyday cases of illegal crossings, filled trucks of “human merchandise”. The closure of the Balkan Route did not create a vacuum and did not close the door for future entering of migrants. In contrary it fueled the fire of illegal crossings facilitated by smugglers. Since the closing of the Balkan Route there is an increase of the number of cases of smuggling of migrants which clearly states the negative results of this step and the EU - Turkey Agreement. Key words: Balkan route, European Union, migrant, smuggling of migrants.
