Abstract

The archeological site Kale – Strezov Grad, village of Čelevec, is located in the Demir Kapija ravine on the left bank of the river Vardar, at the point where the Čelevečka river flows into it. The site itself sits high on the limestones that build the ravine. To the west, the site is protected by the deep canyon of Čelevečka River, and to the south and east by the meander of the Vardar River, with the rocks towering high over the water of the river. The only accessible road leads through the ridge of the rise which on the northern side slowly mounts to the first plateau.

The first records of the site were made by I. Mikulčić within the framework of the project Old Towns and Fortresses in the Middle Povardarie region (Mikulčić, 1988-89). Topographic recordings of the surface remains of the fortification elements were made as part of this project, and some of the findings were published by N. Čausidis, G. Mikulčić and R. Mihajlovski and O. Petrov (Чаусидис 1988, 171-196; Микулчиќ 177-194, cat. no. 53; Михајловски и Петров, 2017, 227-231).

Between 2015 and 2017, research was conducted on three occasions: there was, first of all, probing and then also systematic research of two sectors, namely of the Tower and of the Church sector. The northern tower, which is also the most prominent one of the medieval fortification, was researched within the framework of the first sector, whereas a church complex with various phases of extension and reconstruction, accompanied by a necropolis, were researched in the second sector.
