Abstract

The radicalization of Islam (Islamic radicalism) is not a new phenomenon, but nowadays it has emerged as one of the most serious security and social problems in Europe and the world in general. Attention to this particular phenomenon increased dramatically after the attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001. Interest in radicalization among Muslims in Europe and the phenomenon of homegrown Islamic terrorism have been fueled by the 2004 Madrid bombings and other incidents and arrests in the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany and Denmark, among others. It is most often applied to describe the process by which individuals progress to ideological violence.
Over the past years, the discourse of "radicalization of Islam (Islamic radicalism)" has been instrumental in shaping counterterrorism knowledge, concepts, and strategies. Politicians, police and civil society workers have largely accepted the body of knowledge and apply it in the daily performance of their duties despite not always adequate empirical consistency and a fully developed research procedure.
Starting from the perceived problem, the doctoral thesis describes the theoretical-methodological approaches in the research of security concepts, in the actualization of Islamic radicalism, especially the analysis of the research of security concepts in its interpretations observed through the applied theoretical-methodological concepts. The research is also aimed at the analysis of academic research approaches in our higher education institutions in the period 2016-2021, in the analysis and interpretation of Islamic radicalism.
