Abstract

The main purpose of the paper Turkish power projection towards the Balkans and the security implication to the Republic of North Macedonia is to get an accurate picture and map the Turkish influence in the Balkans through scientific methods analyzing the geopolitical surroundings, forecasting of the future global and regional trends and identifying the key ports of influence (conversion of soft power recourses to outcomes). The aim is to picture the vulnerability of the Macedonian society and to identify the security implications.
The methodology of the paper and the whole research design consists of general social sciences methods and avoidance to use categorical buckets when thinking. In the paper, although we analyze and combine knowledge from related scientific papers and books, we also use publications and reports from different NGOs, think-tank organizations, universities, and state institutions. In accordance with the freedom of information act, we also provide analysis of data gathered from more than 140 Macedonian state and public institutions, universities, corporations and nongovernmental organizations. Using descriptive statistical analysis, we constructed a new scientific approach and analytical framework of measuring soft power projection by identifying more than (eighty) 80 variables (dependent and independent) divided into 5 subcategories.
Findings suggest that Turkey mainly uses soft power to put North Macedonia under its sphere of influence. Considering North Macedonia as a part of the historical Ottoman heritage, implementing a policy of soft Neo-Ottomanism through a stronger projection of soft power, Turkey's main aim is to maximize its cultural, religious, political and economic influence in Macedonia.
We find the originality and the value of this thesis in three key poınts: fırst - improving the methodology of calculating soft power index and creating a new analytical framework consisting more than 80 contextual variables; second - forecasting the future trends and possible outcomes of North Macedonia – Turkey relations and identifying a new type of security threat; and third - suggesting new and original scientific idea constructed through the concept of "digital reality".
