Abstract

A characteristic of the modern world is mass tourism, which includes a great number of stakeholders (organizers, passengers, institutional providers of tourist services, receptive inhabitants, etc.) and which has already become one of the basic elements of modern times.
Tourism is one of the largest and fastest growing sectors in the global economy and has significant economic, developmental and social effects, either positive or negative.
Tourism is expected to develop the country's economy, it contributes to the increase of national income, employment, lowers the trade deficit, strengthens the economic
development of peripheral regions of the country, intensifies the operation of enterprises to produce products and services that directly or indirectly meet the tourist needs.
The greatest treasure of Peja are the values inherited from the past centuries. These values are manifested through a perfect architecture and a magical urban structure, on the one hand, as well as a folk tradition that is very special as value, on the other hand. The cultural and historical heritage of Peja is a rare colorite and a true attraction identifying and making proud the whole of Kosovo.
Peja is a place of different cultures and peoples, different civilizations that contributed today and making the city of a great value for the whole of Europe in terms of cultural and historical past and heritage. In this paper we are focused towards the analysis of cultural and historical factors as a significant potential for sustainable tourism development and promotion of the values of the country as a tourist destination.
The archaeological sites, mosques and tekkes, hamams, towers and churches as a tangible treasure, as well as festivals, customs, cuisine as an intangible spiritual heritage, are
the main characteristics that contributed to the development of tourism as an economic activity in this part of Kosovo.
