Abstract

This paper which is pragmatic in nature, provides an insight into the strategies used to express explicit, emotional gratitude (SEEG) in Macedonian, fala and blagodaram and in English, thanks and thank you when they perform the function of politeness markers. The comparison of these linguistic forms is directed towards detecting similarities and differences pertaining to their syntactic and pragmatic structure , as well as their distribution in various situations which include expressing gratitude for favours, invitations, offers, compliments, congratulations and expressing good wishes. Furthermore, we underline the influence of several parameters ( the power of distance of the interlocutors as well as the value, status and initiator of the favour) on the choice of the formal as opposed to the informal SEEG and their structure.
