Abstract

t
The fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, among many other things,
meant closing the schools and resorting to online teaching in many countries in
the world, ours included. Online teaching is a relatively new and a completely
different method of teaching from the traditional, classroom-based teaching.
Adjusting the teaching material, issuing appropriate instructions, assessing
students’ knowledge, sustaining students’ motivation and interest during online
classes are just a few of the challenges that this pandemic have brought up on
education in general. Teachers of foreign languages as well as learners of
foreign languages are not exempted from these occurrences.
The paper at hand aims to offer interactive team building techniques
suitable for creating an atmosphere in class, conducive for acquiring a foreign
language, for boosting the socialization of all parties involved in the process of
online teaching and learning as well as for sustaining students’ motivation for
studying, and for creating an atmosphere of trust and mutual respect. А special
accent in this paper is put on a selection of introductory team building
techniques proposed by Nik Peachey in his book “Team Building Activities”,
such as The Ice breakers, Identity Iceberg, Human Alphabet, Bucket List, and
The Web Crawl. All arguments presented in this paper seek to provide
validation of the claim that employing such teaching techniques directly
contributes not only to establishing positive socio-emotional atmosphere in
class, but also to proffering possibilities for interaction and mastering the
language much more quickly and easily.
