Abstract

Abstract: The poem “Sterna” was inspired by a legend about а mythical hero, Krale Marko, who is believed
to have prevented fierce underground water from flooding the Prilep plain.
The underground water in the poem is personification of evil, misfortune and deep internal unrest with which
Krale Marko, i.e. every man, fights during his lifetime; all of this is depicted in the poem in a highly dramatic way
and by means of pronounced poetic tension. “Sterna” abounds with culture-specific terms, charged with
expressive power; archaisms; borrowings from Turkish, and instances of dialectal terms. All of these are extremely
challenging to deal with in translation because they reflect the cultural, historic and social differences between
any two countries. Given that these terms are virtually untranslatable, they have the capacity to put the translator’s
skills to a real test.
The paper at hand aims to offer a comprehensive analysis of the original poem and its translations into French
and English, in order to ascertain to what extent the translations are faithful to the original text. The analysis
encompasses the phonetic, lexical, and syntactic level as well as the formal structure and the figures of speech
used in the poem. The results point to the fact that despite the formal and content-related concessions made on the
part of the translators, both translations are highly successful in preserving the major motif and sentiment present
in “Sterna”.
