Abstract

North Macedonia is characterized with low-temperature
geothermal energy utilization, while the
medium and high-temperature potentials are still not
explored. Nevertheless, even the present available
resources are by far underutilized.
This paper gives a summary of the geothermal status in
North Macedonia comprising the geological
background, known hydro-geothermal resources and
their potential, present state of geothermal surveys &
utilization and main projects’ characteristics, with
identification and comments on the negatively
influencing factors. At the end, prospects of the
expected / possible development are summarized.
