In the introductory of the paper, the author will analyze the evolutionary
development of the security service. Furthermore, the author will determine the goals in the
functioning of the service and define the term counterintelligence. Within the paper, the
author defines the role of the Security and Counterintelligence Directorate that existed until
the reforms in 2019 in the Republic of North Macedonia. In the final part of the paper, the
author will define the role of the Agency of National Security and explain the reasons why
there was a need to establish the Agency of National Security. The content will be prepared
on the basis of analysis of foreign literature and using electronic content. In the preparation
of the content of the paper, the author will apply the general scientific methods: the
descriptive method, the normative method, the comparative method and the method of
content analysis as a separate scientific method.
